Can you iron your dress blues?
Dress blues are a formal dress uniform that is worn on special occasions. Turn the uniform shirt inside out and iron it lengthwise on the ironing board. Iron the sleeves first by using two iron strokes on each, then sprinkle a dab of starch on them before using two more strokes on both. Now do the same with the collar and cuffs. If there is any stray thread left, pull it out with a pair of small scissors.
This will make the uniform look brand new. You can also use this method to clean other uniforms including white shirts, pants, and hats.
The reason why we can't iron our regular clothes is because they contain cotton which would get burned if we used the iron. Dress uniforms are made of wool so they can be ironed like a regular shirt but should only be done on the reverse side so as not to melt the wool down.

Does the Navy still have dress blues?
The dinner dress uniforms of the United States Navy are the most formal and have the most variations. For officers, there are dinner dress blue and dinner dress white, dinner dress blue jacket and dinner dress white jacket, and formal dress. Dinner Dress Blue is additionally worn with a dress shirt and a black bow tie. Formal Dress is similar to business casual attire.
Dinner dress uniform was established in 1855 as an attempt by then-President Franklin Pierce to modernize the image of the presidency and make it more consistent with that of other Western nations. Prior to this time, presidents had no set dress code; they wore civilian clothes when attending official functions.
In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation requiring all officers to wear dinner dress at meals. This was due to some of our officers going absent without leave during World War I and causing confusion on ship decks during night maneuvers. Since then, every president has done the same thing (with the exception of Harry S. Truman who usually went commando).
Today, naval officers still wear dinner dress to ceremonial events such as court martials and captain's dinners. In fact, it is required by navy regulations.
However, since most naval officers now work outside the traditional office hours, many choose to wear business casual attire to work. Indeed, almost everyone we talk to around here wears jeans and a T-shirt to work every day.
